Overview

There are three steps to making a blood donation at the Scarborough General Hospital, Signal Hill. Please be reminded to eat a good meal, and drink plenty of fluids before your blood donation and walk with some form of identification.

1Screening: You will be required to fill out a consent form and a nurse will ask you a series of questions. We will also take your blood pressure, weight and blood count.
2Actual Blood Donation: You will be asked to lie down on a reclining chair.
A nurse will disinfect your arm at the inner elbow and insert a cannula.
Blood donation only takes 3 – 5 mins.
3Recovery Time: After donating, you will be given a drink of vita malt and you will be asked to sit and rest for five minutes. If you feel faint, lightheaded or nauseous, please inform the nurse.
It is rare to have any adverse effects from donating blood
